Basic Spanish I
Overview
- Basic syntactic structures
- Basic lexicon
- The phonological system of Spanish
- Cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world
The functional-communicative approach is used. Class activities may include: presentation of material by the instructor, practice in pairs and small groups, listening comprehension, and audio-visual based activities.
Conversation labs in small groups with a Native Language Assistant.

No single evaluation will be worth more than 20%.
Students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in Spanish (present and immediate future tenses only) at the basic level in:
- Aural comprehension of simple discourse
- Reading comprehension of simplified texts
- Speech delivery: extend greetings, express likes, dislikes, preferences and desires, ask questions and give replies
- Written expression: simple sentences and short dialogues
- Understanding target cultures
