About EVENT
Now entering its 50th year of publication, EVENT is an award-winning, internationally recognized literary magazine that publishes fiction, poetry, non-fiction, notes on writing and book reviews by emerging and established writers three times a year. While 90% of our content is Canadian, we welcome submissions written in English from around the world—and our pages strive to reflect the diversity of the reading and writing communities we serve. As one of Western Canada’s longest-running literary magazines, our covers feature contemporary photography by B.C. artists.
stepping-stone for writers
Our publication acts as a stepping-stone for writers, many of whom go on to win literary prizes, receive artist grants, and get published elsewhere after having been first published in our pages. We have published many of Canada’s most distinguished writers both before and after they gained national or international recognition, and continue to support gifted new and emerging writers. The majority of our content remains unsolicited and we consistently provide advice and critique to emerging writers. It is our goal to support and encourage a thriving literary community locally, provincially and nationally, while maintaining our presence in North America and abroad.
EVENT is published by, and affiliated with, Douglas College, a non-profit public institution of higher education based in New Westminster, B.C., Canada.
Non-fiction contest
EVENT runs an acclaimed Annual Non-Fiction Contest—the longest-running annual contest of its kind in Canada, having been established in 1987—featuring Canada’s top writers as its judges. Our unique Reading Service for Writers, established in 1993, provides affordable, high-quality editorial feedback to scores of writers.
Financial support
EVENT gratefully acknowledges financial support toward our editorial and production costs from Douglas College, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Province of British Columbia, the British Columbia Arts Council and the Government of Canada.
