Who We Are
I-CARE • Individualized Community Adult Reading Education
Reading and writing are essential skills that make a difference in everyday lives. Since 1978, the I-CARE Adult Literacy Program at Douglas College has been dedicated to helping English-speaking adults improve these skills. Our learners come from diverse backgrounds and age groups.
Douglas College was the first community college in British Columbia to train volunteer tutors for adult literacy. Our dedicated volunteers meet with learners once a week to provide one-on-one support. Over the years, I-CARE has helped more than 800 adults enhance their basic reading and writing skills.
Our Philosophy
The I-CARE Adult Literacy Program offers cost-free, individualized tutoring to help adults improve their functional reading and writing skills.
Learning to read and write is a basic right for everyone.
Everyone should have the opportunity to learn, whether building on existing knowledge or exploring new subjects.
Who Can Join the Program?
English-speaking adults who find reading and writing challenging or need to improve skills.
Able to meet with tutors for two hours, once a week.
Motivated to improve reading and writing skills.
