Learning Activities

The workplace supervisor will provide tasks and will supervise and evaluate student performance. The work-experience faculty member will meet with individual students to discuss work-experience plans and review necessary documentation (such as cover letters and resumes) and procedures. Ongoing support will be provided by e-mail, telephone, and meetings.

Course Description
This course provides students with field-based experience in the entertainment industry. Students will have the opportunity to apply their job search, interview, resume writing, and interpersonal skills while making valuable employment contacts.
Course Content

1. Preparing for Work Experience

Successful students will:

  1. submit resumes appropriate for professional technicians
  2. meet with the work-experience faculty member to discuss individual professional goals
  3. apply for posted positions or arrange work experience acceptable to the program

2. During the Work Experience

Successful students will:

  1. perform the duties assigned by the workplace supervisor of the work experience
  2. work within the organizational expectations for hours, days of work, and dress code
  3. ask for feedback for continued learning
  4. arrange for a meeting of the supervisor and work-experience faculty member at a time convenient to both
  5. participate in all assigned relevant tasks
  6. demonstrate an ability to establish effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors
  7. assume responsibility for contacting the work-experience faculty member if issues or concerns arise
  8. keep a journal that will allow the student to submit a self-evaluation at the completion of the work experience

3. After the Work Experience

Successful students will:

  1. arrange for a post mortem meeting with the work-experience faculty member
  2. submit a self-evaluation report and journal
Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the successful student should be able to:

  1. learn resume writing, interview techniques and job hunting skills
  2. apply skills and work ethic developed in Stagecraft to a workplace situation in which they will be expected to function as professionals
  3. consistently apply all safety training in the workplace
  4. be in a work situation in which they will take direction, work as a member of a team and meet deadlines
  5. make valuable networking contacts
  6. have a professional work experience to add to their resumes
Means of Assessment

Students will be evaluated on the basis of Mastery/No Credit Granted.

  1. The student, workplace supervisor, and work-experience faculty member will participate in the evaluation process.
  2. The workplace supervisor will evaluate the student’s work, attendance, and work ethic.
  3. The work-experience faculty member will make at least one site visit and do an evaluation during the work experience.
  4. A minimum of 60 hours of field experience, satisfactory work as judged by the employer and work-experience faculty member, and self-evaluation must be completed to receive a Mastery grade.
  5. Students who do not work as professionals with appropriate work ethic, safety awareness and respect for employers and employers’ staff may be removed from the workplace before the work experience is completed.
