Accountants Beyond Borders
Overview
- research the culture of the developing country and the work assigned to their team
- identify objectives and deliverables for their assignment
- prepare a detailed task analysis and planning
- perform field work in accounting and connect with populations in developing countries and business professionals
- maintain detailed journal daily of the field experience including training made available to them, description of tasks performed, and of feedback received
- prepare a field experience report analyzing the knowledge gained in the field experience and integrate that knowledge with formal education
- deliver a final presentation illustrating their experiential learning accomplishments
Students engage in a variety of learning activities such as lectures, seminars, group work, case studies, practicums, and field experience. Students will mostly work in teams.
- Focus of this course is a practical experience in a developing country.
- Each student will be assigned a sponsoring firm in a developing country to undertake the student's field experience.
- The faculty will meet and interact with the student on regular basis and will serve as the student’s mentor throughout the field work
- The student, with the support of faculty, will prepare an initial proposal outlining the objectives and intended outcomes of the field experience.
- Class time will be limited, and will focus on project management techniques, cultural sensitivity and problem solving skills.
- Students will present their report reflecting on the work experience, while providing recommendations where appropriate.
Assessment will be based on course objectives and will be carried out in accordance with the Douglas College Evaluation Policy. This is a Mastery graded course.”
Students will be evaluated based on the following componnents:
- Research on culture, planning & objectives
- Group Participation
- Work experience & client evaluation
- Final Report
- Presentation
Students must complete all components of the course to obtain credit for the course.
The fundamental objectives of this course are to develop the capability to:
- utilize problem analysis skills to solve unique challenges facing organizations/businesses supporting populations in developing countries;
- translate accounting challenges into a feasible project with a plan, a strategy, and deliverables;
- apply and integrate accounting concepts and methods learned in previous courses to real-life situation;
- analyze and cooperate with the culture of the business environment;
- work effectively in team settings and develop positive client interactions;
- integrate the various parts of the work experience, reflect on milestones achieved, identify results and make recommendations where appropriate.
