How John Paul Escala’s time at Douglas College brought him success in teaching

Volunteer opportunities and hands-on training helped Science and Technology alum John Paul (JP) Escala work towards his career goal of teaching.

JP was inspired to pursue teaching as a career because of his passion for educating youth to reach their true potential. Small class sizes meant that JP was able to pursue his interests while thriving in a comfortable, tight-knit environment. During his time at Douglas, he obtained a Diploma in Early Childhood Education - Special Needs, a Diploma in Sports Science and a Bachelor’s of Physical Education and Coaching with a Kinesiology concentration.

Even when he was having difficulty with his course content, the support he received from his instructors made all the difference. Resources from study tips to quiet learning spaces were integral to his success.

Today, JP is a student at the University of British Columbia in the Bachelor of Education program and a Teacher Candidate for Semiahmoo Secondary School. He hopes to teach health, outdoor and physical education. JP consistently exemplifies a passion to better his community by advocating the importance of health in a larger scope, including its sustainability – economically, globally and locally.
