Course Description
In this course, students learn about a range of project management methodologies including Agile, Projects in Controlled Environments version 2 (PRINCE2) and others. Students will study Agile methods including Scrum, XP, Lean and Kanban, sprints, just-in-time requirements definition, priority-setting and delivery of incremental results. The course will explore a range of approaches that may be emerging or may apply to specific contexts such as specific parts of the world or in industries with unique conditions. Students who successfully complete this course will cover topics needed to successfully write the Project Management Institute’s Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP) exam.
Course Content
  1. Definition of project management methodology; relationship to the Project Management Body of Knowledge
  2. Contexts for project management and the application of appropriate methods to each context
  3. Organizations that support methodologies, including Project Management Institute; the International Project Management Association; the APM Group
  4. Agile project management including scrum, XP, lean and Kanban, sprints, just-in-time requirements definition, priority-setting and delivery of incremental results
  5. PRINCE2
  6. How to select appropriate methodologies and how to use them within the context of the Project Management Body of Knowledge
  7. Other current methodologies at the discretion of the instructor
Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete the course will be able to:

  1. Name and describe a range of current project management methodologies;
  2. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of each project management methodology and describe the context(s) in which each method is most suitable;
  3. Choose an appropriate current project management methodology and use it to create project success;
  4. Participate in a variety of project management meetings;
  5. Facilitate a project management meeting;
  6. Communicate effectively using the tools and approaches of each methodology;
  7. Explain the relationship between distinct methodologies and the Project Management Body of Knowledge;
  8. Integrate appropriate methodologies with additional knowledge areas in managing complex projects;
  9. Complete a small term project using Agile; and
  10. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to pass the Project Management Institute’s Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP) exam
