Course Description
This course makes an introduction to fundamentals of existing data communications technologies as well business opportunities and challenges presented by emerging data communications technologies. The course provides a balanced mix of business and IT management concepts. This course aims to develop a coherent understanding of the fundamental data communications concepts and technologies. Homework & research assignments are designed to expose students to practical applications of these concepts and technologies.
Students who have received credit for CISY 2345 or CISY 2346 will not receive further credit for CSIS 1150.

Course Content
- Review of personal computer hardware and the operating system
- Fundamental concepts of data communications – Application, Physical, Data Link and Network/Transport layer
- Principals of communication and connecting to the network
- Network Services
- Network Technologies – Local Area Network (LAN) and Wireless LAN
- Wireless technologies - Wide Area Network (WAN) and Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
- Internet standards and services
- Network Management – Security, Design and Management of the network
- Research on data communications and networking issues in real world business settings
Learning Outcomes
The student should be able to:
- Explain the basic understanding of the technical and management aspects of business data communications and networking.
- Explain how networks such as the Internet move messages from one computer to another though the different hardware and software components
- Design networks (at a novice level) using a variety of LAN, backbone and WAN technologies and components
- Explain the major components of the TCP/IP protocol suite, including IPv4 and IPv6;
- Configure commonly used network software, such as Windows routers
- Describe the importance of networking standards and standards bodies;
- Describe the OSI model and the process of encapsulation;
- Describe the structure of the Internet and how Internet communications occur between hosts;
- Understand network management in terms of design, security.
- Appreciate and address some area of investigation in the field of data communications beyond the information presented in class.
