Overview

Course Description
This course is designed for Foreign-trained English-language educators (referred to as "trainees") to complement the knowledge and experience they have already acquired. The course will focus on interactive techniques, strategies, and methods, and will provide the trainees with a portfolio of ready-to-use activities for the classroom, as well as the pedigogical theory to support practical applications. Best practices in the teaching of the four skill areas will be covered along with an overview of the linguistic challenges faced by English language learners. Special attention will be paid to the use of educational technology including social media, video, and the Internet.
Course Content

This course will look at the theory, methodology, resources, and techniques for teaching and assessing students of English as a Foreign Language.

Means of Assessment

Student achievement will be assessed using the mastery grading system in accordance with College policy. The following is one example of assessment components and weighting:

  • 20%:  Microteaching preparation and delivery
  • 20%:  Observation tasks
  • 20%:  Formal written assignments
  • 20%:  Quizzes
  • 10%:  Other homework assignments, including group assignments
  • 10%:  Class participation, including attendance, punctuality, and collegiality

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, learners will be able to

  • apply major principles of adult education to teaching EFL students
  • adapt existing textbooks to the needs of their EFL students
  • assess the usefulness of activities for enhancing the learning of their EFL students
  • design and run effective interactive activities to encourage classroom engagement
  • create materials to promote relevant, engaging EFL learning
  • apply valid, reliable assessment strategies to EFL learning
  • use appropriate classroom language to a greater degree of correctness
