Course Description
This practical course builds on the learning experiences in HCSW 1105: Applied Practice Experiences 1. Students have further opportunities to integrate theory from other courses, and to consolidate care-giving skills in the laboratory and clinical settings. In the laboratory, increase emphasis will be placed on home and community settings. For this second clinical experience, students will continue to practice and learn in multi-level or complex care facilities, providing an opportunity for students to gain expertise and confidence with the role of the HCA.
Course Content
NOTE: All skills are taught in such a way that facility, community, and acute care contexts are recognized.
Consolidation of laboratory skills from HCSW 1105
Heat and cold applications
Assisting with Medications for clients able to direct own care
Promoting comfort and rest
- Admitting a person to a facility
Measuring vital signs
- Measuring height and weight
- Measuring body temperature, pulse, and respirations
- Reporting and recording vital signs
Assisting with oxygen needs
Home management
- Maintaining safety and medical asepsis in the home setting
- Community resources and supports

Course evaluation is consistent with Douglas College course evaluation policy. An evaluation schedule is presented at the beginning of the course.
This is a MASTERY course. Students will receive a detailed outline of performance expectations at the beginning of the course.
