Learning activities

Practicum experience in Community Mental Health Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) settings includes supervised practice settings, group discussions, seminars, and self-study.

 

Course description
In this course students are introduced to the community mental health clinical practice setting. Students will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with their roles and responsibilities as a community mental health worker and as a member of the community mental health team. Students will begin to apply Community Mental Health Work (CMHW) concepts and therapeutic communication skills with individuals experiencing mental health challenges. Students will identify community resources available to mental health clients. Psychosocial Rehabilitation(PSR) utilizing the principles of the Recovery Model of mental health care will be the focus of this clinical practicum.

  • Beginning application of CMHW program theoretical concepts:  
    • PSR approach and Recovery Model of mental health care
    • Therapeutic relationships
    • Therapeutic communication skills
    • Caring client-centered practice
  • Experience with utilizing/following agency policies and procedures
  • Experience with ensuring respectful client confidentiality
  • Conducting holistic assessments and developing a client-centered care plan
  • Experience with working within the CMHW practice roles and limitations
  • Clinical documentation
  • Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team
Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Understand the multidisciplinary team approach within the clinical setting
Means of assessment

Course evaluation is consistent with the Douglas College Evaluation Policy.  An evaluation schedule is presented at the beginning of the course. Students will receive a detailed outline of performance expectations at the beginning of the course. This is a Mastery course based on demonstration of having met course learning outcomes and performance expectations.
