Students learn through active participation in group interaction. Although the course is not group therapy, students are encouraged and challenged to take risks. Personal growth develops from a willingness to share experiences, thoughts and feelings. This occurs in HUMD 1100 in the form of offering input to class discussions, being active in small group discussions and participating in presentations, role-plays and group exercises.
Depending upon the needs of the class and the discretion of the instructor, specific topics may include:
- Dimensions and awareness of the self.
- Personal History.
- Personal needs/rights/values
- Personal style of relating to self and others. Relationships. Group roles.
- Problem solving, decision making, goal attainment
- Self-management processes
- Group presentation skills and coping strategies
- Giving and receiving constructive feedback
- Time and Stress Management
- To increase self-awareness, and to realize one’s strengths and weaknesses as a source of growth.
- To increase understanding of factors that influence behavior.
- To establish confidence in ability to take charge of one’s life.
- To learn to accept and trust, and to take planful risks.
- To develop a willingness to accept responsibility for one’s actions.
- To learn skills and strategies toward personal development and successful self-management and goal attainment.
Due to the experiential nature of the course, regular attendance is necessary to maximize student learning. The specific inclusion and weighting of the following items will be determined by the instructor in accordance with college policy.
- Attendance and participation in class activities.
- A weekly written journal in which learning derived from class activities will be described.
- Completion of various assignments, exercises, inventories, etc.
- Report on topic(s) related to the course content and objectives.
- Small group research and oral presentation.
- An action plan designed to promote personal goal attainment.
- Quizzes and/or tests.
