In this course, students engage in a variety of learning activities such as lecture, group work, case studies, and team-based exercises.

Course Description
This course prepares the learner to be a successful employee in the workplace. Emphasis will be placed on the need for self-care. Utilizing practices related to stress management will be explored. Self-awareness with responsibilities and obligations as a professional for promoting excellence in practice, critical self-reflection, and the philosophy of lifelong learning will be included.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1.    Understand how their personal and work-related stress and stressors can impact them as an employee;
2.    Demonstrate an understanding of stress management techniques;  
3.    Understand the process of debriefing in relation to stress management and crisis intervention;
4.    Demonstrate an understanding of how and why supportive relationships are useful to the caregiver;
5.    Understand the benefits of life-long learning and its importance in remaining current in one's practice;
6.    Understand and discuss strategies and resources that foster learning;
7.    Demonstrate an understanding of how research enhances excellence in the practice setting;
8.    Demonstrate an understanding of self-evaluation and peer feedback regarding maintaining and promoting excellence in practice for the Mental Health and Substance Use Worker.

Means of Assessment

Assessment will be based on course objectives and will be carried out in accordance with the Douglas College Evaluation Policy. An evaluation schedule is presented at the beginning of the course.

This course is a graded course, not a mastery course.

Textbook Materials

Textbooks and materials are to be purchased by students. A list of required textbooks and materials will be provided for students at the beginning of the semester.

Prerequisites

Students in the MHSU program are required to maintain a passing grade of 65% (C+) in all courses to progress in the program.
