  1. Technique – in all major and minor keys

    • Scales and arpeggios:
      • hands together
      • increase in velocity
    • Chords:
      • hands together
      • increase in velocity
  2. Repertoire
    • More advanced pieces that employ a mixture of elements: accompanied melody, figurations, contrapuntal  textures, etc., in tonal and contemporary idioms.
    • Two pieces by memory will be required for the jury examination.
  3. Sight Reading
    • 2- and 3-part pieces
    • homophonic pieces
    • isolated triads and seventh chords
    • (One sight reading piece will be required for the jury examination.)
  4. Transposition – at the discretion of the instructor.
    • Simple homophonic pieces and near-related keys.
  5. Expanded Popular/Jazz Music Chording and Improvisation – at the discretion of the instructor.
  6. Performance and Attendance
    • Students are required to perform in at least one student recital, at the discretion of the instructor.
    • Students are required to attend all Arts at One concerts.
Learning outcomes

The successful student will be able to interpret and perform keyboard repertoire, demonstrate technical requirements, and sight read at an appropriate level, as outlined in the Course Content.

Means of assessment

70% of the total mark will be allotted by the instructor on the basis of weekly progress in the various aspects of the course.  The instructor and student will discuss the student’s progress and performance level at regular intervals (minimum three times) during the semester, so that the student is aware of his/her current standing and what is expected.  No single evaluation will be worth more than 40% of the final grade (please see Douglas College’s evaluation policy).

30% of the total mark will be based on a juried examination, adjudicated by two members of the music faculty.

The following is a sample grade breakdown:

15%     Technical progress

15%     Musicianship progress

25%     Technical and musical performance level

15%     Attitude and effort

30%     Jury examination

100%   Total

Up to 10% of the total mark will be deducted for unfulfilled participation.  The following explains the grading calculation:

  • 5% is deducted for failure to perform, at the discretion of the instructor.
  • 1% is deducted for each absence from the Arts at One concert series.
  • 1% is added for each additional performance and/or accompaniment above the minimum. This addition will only offset marks that have been deducted.
Textbook materials

The instructor will recommend suitable materials to cover repertoire, sight reading and technical needs.
