Overview

Course Description
The Final Technology Project comprises a supervised individual project, in which students explore the principles and techniques developed in the program thus far. This capstone project shows mastery and synthesis of the skills learned in the program, and relates to the student’s artistic and professional experience and goals. Possible projects include (but are not limited to) audio recordings, electronic music productions, film scores, or game music. Students will present their projects at the year-end MTD Portfolio Show.
Course Content

At the start of the Project the student will produce a two- to three-page project proposal. This must be signed by the instructor most closely associated with the project and the Project Supervisor. The proposal must include:

  • A description of the proposed project in terms of the problems to be solved, equipment needed, technologies, languages, etc.
  • A summary of the preparations already completed for the project, including consultations with the advisor and any previous recording or production work
  • A plan for completion of the project, including a schedule of work
  • A description of the proposed presentation for the Portfolio Show  

Throughout the term the students will work with the Project Supervisor to critique each others work and refine their projects.
The Portfolio Show will be a co-presentation of the final projects of all students completing the course.  The students will collectively plan, coordinate and promote this presentation, with the guidance of the Project Supervisor.

Learning Activities

At the start of the project, the student and project supervisor(s) will define the topic to be addressed and develop a plan for its performance. This course centres on the execution of that plan, through to the production of a major work. The topic of the project must be agreed upon with the project supervisor, but may be chosen with the student's personal interests in mind. Students will give a formal presentation of their work.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Work independently on a major project, according to a plan agreed upon with the project supervisor.
  • Develop a realistic and achievable project plan, with major milestones and objectives clearly indicated.
  • Demonstrate time-management and organizational skills through adherence to the project plan.
  • Apply established practices and techniques in an area relevant to music technology.
  • Formally present the salient points of the context, planning and execution of the project, using appropriate technology.

No texts or materials are required. All required hardware and software for the completion of assignments and projects is available in the studio.
