Overview

Course Description
The study of form in tonal music with emphasis on the analysis of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century instrumental and vocal genres.
Course Content
  1. Principles of musical form:  concepts and terms.
  2. The role of melody, rhythm, harmony, texture and phrase in the formal process.
  3. Review of binary, ternary and compound ternary forms.
  4. Analysis of Classical and Romantic forms:  sonata, rondo, sonata-rondo.
Learning Activities

Concepts and techniques are presented and discussed in the lectures; assignments are undertaken by the students.

Learning Outcomes

The student will learn harmonic, melodic, rhythmic, and structural materials of tonal music. The student will be expected to:

  1. provide an analysis of representative musical excerpts or entire compositions;
  2. provide written answers to questions on any aspect of the course content.

       • Kostka, Stefan, Dorothy Payne and Byron Almén.  Tonal Harmony with an Introduction to Post-Tonal Music.  New York:  McGraw-Hill.  Plus accompanying Workbook.

  • Turek, Ralph. The Elements of Music: Concepts and Applications. Volumes I & II. New York: McGraw-Hill. Plus Workbook, Volumes 1 & 2
