It is the intent of faculty to facilitate student learning, and promote critical inquiry, reflection and analytical reasoning through a variety of learning processes. Students will be engaged in a variety of learning activities such as decision-making analysis, group discussion, and reflection on practice. These may vary depending on the location of the field experience, the context of practice and emerging learning opportunities.
Assessment will be in accordance with the Douglas College Evaluation Policy. A course evaluation schedule and other course evaluation information are provided on the instructor’s course outline available to students at the beginning of the course. This is a mastery course.
At the end of this course, successful students will be able to:
- Examine the cultural, political, economic, and social contexts of the service learning environment.
- Apply the values and practices of cultural safety and humility, balance and reciprocity, witnessing and observing, and relational practice.
- Reflect on personal values, beliefs, and motivations as they apply to the service learning experience.
- Engage in community development experiences to gain a broader understanding of global health in a context different from one's usual environment.
- Identify strategies to address health disparities across social, demographic, cultural, or geographically defined populations.
- Recognize the importance of sustainable development goals in relation to health and health care.
- Consider health literacy when engaging in teaching and learning where intercultural communication is required.

Prerequisites
Students in the BSN program are required to maintain a passing grade of 65% (C+) in all courses in order to progress in the program.
