Overview

Course Description
This course introduces students to the role of the office professional and human relations. It covers general office procedures such as effective telephone techniques, appointment booking, mail handling, ergonomics, office supply orders, inventories, organization, paper and electronic filing, bank reconciliations and handling petty cash. Students will become certified in WHMIS.

COMPLETION OF WHMIS CERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED TO PASS THIS COURSE.

Students may conduct research as part of their coursework in this class. Instructors for the course are responsible for ensuring that student research projects comply with College policies on ethical conduct for research involving humans, which can require obtaining Informed Consent from participants and getting the approval of the Douglas College Research Ethics Board prior to conducting the research.

Learning Outcomes

The learner has reliably demonstrated the ability to

  1. identify the skills and abilities of the office professional.
  2. complete WHMIS certification.
  3. describe how office ergonomics involve furniture, lighting, acoustics, position of equipment, and posture.
  4. discuss the importance human relations plays in the workplace.
  5. describe how to prepare cheques and make bank deposits, how to complete accurate bank reconciliation statements.
  6. use paper and electronic calendars to schedule and cancel appointments.
  7. demonstrate skills needed for effective use of the telephone.
  8. explain procedures for processing incoming and outgoing mail.
  9. order, organize and maintain an inventory of office supplies.
  10. define terminology used in records management.
  11. identify and explain the use of different types of filing equipment and filing supplies.
  12. index, code, cross-reference, and sort incoming letters and copies of outgoing letters for individuals, businesses and governments.
  13. store and retrieve documents applying ARMA rules in an alphabetic, a subject, a numeric and a geographical filing system.
  14. explain the advantages and disadvantages of each of these systems.
  15. maintain a tickler file.
  16. process “request-for-record: forms and charge-out requests”.
