Learning activities

Seminar:

Prior to the experience, the students will meet at the college at assigned times to research, plan, and discuss the theatre experience.

 

Field experience:

Once at the destination, the students will work independently or as a group to actualize the plan that they created prior to departure.  The instructor will schedule daily check-ins to support the students and help them stay on track to complete their objectives.

 

Course description
This is a field experience course, where the student prepares for, participates in, and reflects upon their experience at a major international theatre experience. Examples include Edinburgh Festival, Prague Quadrennial, Venice Biennial, USITT, LDI (Las Vegas), and World Stage Design. Typically this course is offered as a directed study course as part of a field school or study tour experience.
Course content

To prepare for the experience, the student will:

  • Research the history and subject matter of the theatre experience.
  • Research the location of the theatre experience.
  • Explore the cross-cultural implications of participating in an international theatre experience.
  • Create a personal itinerary for events at the theatre experience.
  • Explore volunteering, performing, and presenting opportunities at the theatre experience.
  • Explore networking opportunities with peers and industry professionals at the theatre experience.

 

During the experience, the student will:

  • Engage critically with the programming at the theatre experience by attending workshops, seminars, lectures, and performances at the theatre experience.
  • Explore opportunities for volunteering, presenting, or performing at the theatre experience.
  • Complete a daily journal or video blog of experiences.

 

After the experience, the student will:

  • Write a reflective essay and submit along with the daily journal and/or video blog of experiences.
  • Compile a personal database of contacts and industry professionals from the theatre experience.
Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Research available volunteering, performing, or presenting opportunities at major international theatre experiences that occur on an annual or multi-year basis.
  • Prepare for an international theatre experience, including building a budget, planning travel logistics, and researching the destination.
  • Manage time on site at the international experience to maximize participation in workshops, seminars and performances.
  • Consider how to respond to an international theatre experience through writing and/or the medium of video-blog.
  • Forge connections with peers and industry professionals.
