Learning activities

This is a no-instructor; self-directed course structured with self-paced work and workshop components. 

Students must take responsibility for their completion. An initial schedule will be distributed and students must meet deadlines. Workshops will be on-campus. In some cases they will be repeated at different locations and may require an additional fee. This will allow some flexibility of scheduling.

Course description
This course prepares the student to work safely within the context of the department and in the professional world. Successful students will earn certifications that are required by unions and employers in theatre, film and related industries.
Course content
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) offered online
  • Occupational First Aid Level One, Safety Awareness and safety workshops offered through ACTSAFE BC (www.actsafe.bc.ca) or other qualified providers

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the successful student will be able to:

  • articulate worker responsibilities as they relate to working safely and confidently in the fast-paced environment of the entertainment industry
  • demonstrate completion of training and certifications needed to enter the entertainment industry
  • articulate and practice safety policies and procedures during Stagecraft and Event Technologies laboratories, practicums and productions
Means of assessment

Students will be evaluated on the basis of Mastery/No Credit Granted.

Certificates of completion for all workshops and a minimum of 75% on the final quiz.

Textbook materials

A list of recommended reading materials will be provided at the beginning of each semester.

Please be prepared to spend up to $50 for workshops.
