Overview

Course Description
This course introduces students to the basic technical and creative skills required by the Theatre and Film Costumer. Research techniques, script analysis, paperwork and construction techniques will be emphasized.
Course Content

Costume Organization:

  • the costume person’s role in production, relationship with other members of the team
  • script analysis and breakdown including appropriate paperwork
  • running costumes crew for Stage performances
  • costume vocabulary,  fabric terminology

The Costume Shop:

  • Equipment and materials including:
    • Costume construction equipment
    • serger, industrial and domestic sewing machine equipment
    • industrial iron and steamer use
  • Construction techniques including:
    • industrial and domestic sewing machine
    • use hand sewing techniques
    • dyeing and ageing costumes
Learning Activities

Students will receive three hours of lecture/demonstration per week that includes independent work and one-on-one instruction.

Means of Assessment

Students are expected to be self-motivated and to demonstrate professionalism, which includes active participation, attendance, punctuality, effective collaboration, and ability to meet deadlines.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the successful student should be aware of:

  • production costume shop equipment
  • costume construction techniques, sewing skills
  • The role of the Costume Designer; interpreting designer’s sketches
  • Textile dying and ageing costumes
  • The role of costume running crew for stage performances
  • preparation and care of costumes – fittings and alterations
  • script breakdown and analysis for costuming requirements
