Learning activities

Students will receive five hours of lecture/demonstration per week that includes lecture, independent work and one-on-one instruction. This course will take place in a Douglas College computer lab. Some open lab time is available.

Course description
This course builds on the skills acquired in STGE 1260: Introduction to CAD. It is a practical guide to creating lighting plots and associated paperwork on industry-standard software. Students will be introduced to two dimensional techniques, plot organization, and interactive paperwork. This course is appropriate for professional upgrading.
Course content
  1. Setting up a drawing: importing, building classes and layers, organization through Saved Views, Sheet Layers and Design Layers
  2. Creating lighting positions and lighting devices
  3. Using libraries and plug-in objects
  4. Creating databases and other related paperwork
  5. Combining all techniques in a finished lighting plot
  6. Creating a template that the students may use on other productions
Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the successful student should be able to:

  1. structure layers, classes and other organizational elements of the drawing
  2. use  libraries and plug-in objects and create custom components
  3. transfer data between plots, spreadsheets, schedules and other paperwork
  4. have an awareness of the possibilities of the 3D aspects of the software and skills to explore this area further
Means of assessment

Students are expected to be self-motivated and to demonstrate professionalism, which includes active participation, good attendance, punctuality, effective collaboration, and the ability to meet deadlines.

Textbook materials

A list of recommended textbooks and materials is provided on the Instructor’s Course Outline, which is available to students at the beginning of each semester. Some hand-outs will be provided. Students need not own a copy of the software to be successful in this course.
