Students will receive 3 hours of lecture/demonstration per week that includes independent work and one-on-one instruction. Guest speakers and field trips to venues and suppliers may be included.

Course Description
This course introduces students to the special events industry in Metro Vancouver. Students will have the opportunity to examine this sector of the entertainment industry and its relationship to traditional theatrical production. The transferability of theatrical production skills to the special events industry will also be explored.
Course Content
  1. Special event venues, suppliers and organizations
  2. Specialized equipment and training
  3. Public safety issues, statutes, regulations, fire code and best practices
  4. Production management techniques and forms
  5. Design and décor techniques and skills
  6. Documentation and drawing requirements
  7. Labour relations, crew and venue regulations
Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the successful student should be able to:

  1. describe the special event industry in Vancouver
  2. identify unique job skills and competencies specific to the special event industry
  3. develop a concept design for a special event
  4. identify some of the various special event venues, suppliers and organizations
  5. demonstrate an understanding of the specialized equipment used in the special event industry
  6. demonstrate an understanding of the relevant legal and statutory regulations
Means of Assessment

Students are expected to be self-motivated and to demonstrate professionalism, which includes active participation, good attendance, punctuality, effective collaboration, and ability to meet deadlines.
