A high school soccer team grapples with a complex and changing world in Douglas College’s production of “The Wolves”

Performance dates: March 20–28, 2025

Performance location: Laura C. Muir Theatre, New Westminster Campus

A fierce team faces the realities of love, loss and the search for identity – all on a suburban soccer field – in Douglas College’s production of The Wolves.

Presented by the Douglas College departments of Theatre and Stagecraft & Event Technology, Sarah DeLappe’s The Wolves opens March 20 at 7:30pm in the New Westminster Campus’s Laura C. Muir Theatre.

This play provides a glimpse into the lives of nine high school female soccer players as they must bear the weight of issues on a personal and global scale. From menstruation and anxiety to politics, war and grief, no topic goes untouched during their early morning warm-ups.

“The women in The Wolves don’t talk about light matters. They talk about the stuff that is real for them and in our world,” said director Tamara McCarthy. “Sarah DeLappe writes these characters so beautifully strong and flawed; we cannot help but get sucked into their world.”

Identified solely by the numbers on their jerseys, the girls struggle to find their individuality while maintaining the team’s collective goal. And, as they near the end of high school, the players don’t just have to deal with being scouted or ending their soccer careers, but also the impending reality of adulthood.

“All of us, at all ages during our lives, are seeking to discover or redefine ourselves,” said McCarthy. “This play isn’t just for women or people who like soccer. It’s about heart and struggle. It’s for everyone.”

The cast of The Wolves includes Anja Rodaljević (New Westminster), Beatriz Brizoti (Burnaby), Ella Bacchioni (Coquitlam), Madison Hickman (White Rock), Ravjot Mann (Surrey), Rebecca De la Fuente (Vancouver), Rojina Alipour (Vancouver), Selena Nguyen (Coquitlam) and Yan Wing (Tracy) So (Vancouver).
