* The selection of courses in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics will depend on a student's educational background and university transfer goals. For example, a student who graduated from secondary school with Pre-Calculus Mathematics 12, Chemistry 12 and Physics 12 may wish to eventually transfer to a university degree program and might choose to take appropriate higher-level courses such as MATH 1120, CHEM 1110 and PHYS 1210.
** The selection of an English or Communications course is quite flexible as long as the course emphasizes writing skills. In second year, students will write many reports.
*** A university transferable course is a course that transfers to one of the 5 Research Universities - SFU, UBC, UBCO, UNBC or UVIC – according to the BC Transfer Guide.
Progress Requirement for Full-Time Continuation in the Program
In order to continue in the program with priority registration, students must meet the following criteria:
- maintain a 2.0 GPA;
- in the first year complete EAES 1120 (or GEOG 1120), EAES 1121, EAES 1900, GEOG 2270, and MATH 1110 (or 1105 or 1120).
- complete at least 27 program-eligible credits in the period September through May, which must include at least 4 EAES courses.
Students who are dropped from the Program will no longer receive priority registration, but may continue at their own pace and graduate with the Geological Resources Diploma when they have met all the graduation requirements.
Availability of Courses in the Geological Resources Diploma Program
Course offerings are limited, and some courses are offered only once per year. Students should therefore plan their courses carefully before registration and in consultation with the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Students should be aware that achieving a C- or better is required for all courses that are prerequisites.
