Course Description
This course introduces computer applications for analyzing geological and mining exploration data to produce a variety of outputs including maps, cross-sections and 2D and 3D models.
Course Content
  • Map production using acquired data, including topographic, geologic, geophysical, geochemical, drilling, land tenure and environmental data
  • Publicly available data sets
  • Exploration data sets
  • Digital terrain models
  • 2D and 3D surface and subsurface data display
  • Reserve and resource estimates
  • Software packages for geological mapping, which may include ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, Google Earth Pro, Microsoft Office, Maptek Vulcan, GeoSoft Target, Leapfrog Geo, Reflex ioGAS and others
Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • produce maps displaying surface data;
  • acquire, format and process geological and exploration data;
  • integrate data from a variety of sources into geological maps;
  • create 2D and 3D models from surface and subsurface data;
  • manage and parse large data sets of geological data;
  • use drill hole data to estimate the type and size of mineral deposits;
  • analyze data to provide input for reserve/resource estimates;
  • use and compare open source software to proprietary software for geological mapping and analysis.
Means of Assessment

Assessment will be in accordance with the Douglas College Evaluation Policy. The instructor will present a written course outline with specific evaluation criteria at the beginning of the semester. Evaluation will be based on the following:

Labs and Assignments:     20-50%
Project(s): 10-30%
Lab exams: 0-30%
Term Tests: 15-30%
Final Exam: 25-30%
Total: 100%
