Learning Activities

The instructor will facilitate, observe and evaluate students' participation in learning activities which directly

support their Economics 1101 coursework.  Whole and small group instruction will be combined with

individual assistance and student directed learning.

Course Description
This course is an adjunct course for EASL students enrolled in Economics 1101. Students will develop language and study skills to support their Economics 1101 coursework. Activities will develop the listening and speaking skills students need to participate effectively in and out of class. They will also develop the reading and writing skills required to complete course assignments satisfactorily and perform well on tests. Students' overall academic language proficiency should improve as well.
Course Content

The language content will be derived from the Economics course content and requirements, and sequenced

accordingly.

 

Listening:

l.  Understanding lecture content

2   Following discussions

3.  Taking and using notes

4.  Understanding assignment instructions

 

Speaking:

l.  Understanding and studying the textbook

2.  Understanding other course materials, such as newspaper and journal articles, and assignment instructions.

3.  Understanding test questions

 

Writing:

l.  Answering short essay test questions

2.  Writing a term paper

 

Study Skills:

l.  Organizing coursework

2.  Preparing for and completing assignments

3.  Studying for tests

4.  Using the library for research purposes

Learning Outcomes

Within the context of Economics 1101, successful students can:

-understand lectures, take notes, and follow classroom discussions

-participate in class discussions and communicate with the instructor about course requirements

-understand and use textbook and other reading materials to complete assignments, and take tests

-complete the term paper assignment

-study efficiently

Means of Assessment

A mastery model of on-going evaluation will be used.  A student will reach mastery when s/he has

demonstrated through satisfactory completion of exercises, assignments and other assessments that the course

objectives have been achieved.

 

Where formal tests of specific skills are used, mastery will be defined as a score of 70% or more.

 

Progress will be monitored on a regular basis by the instructor in consultation with each student.

 

This course will be graded independently from Economics 1101.
