Learning Activities

In this course, students engage in a variety of learning activities.  Practicum experience in Mental Health Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) settings includes supervised practice settings, group discussions, and self-study.

Course Description
This course introduces students to the mental health and substance use clinical practice setting. Learning opportunities will encourage students to use all the concepts and therapeutic communication skills they have learned thus far in the program to assist the individuals with mental health and substance use disorders to maximize their independence. Students will begin to recognize the importance of the mental health and substance use worker and the role they play as part of the community health team. Students will recognize Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) principles and how they apply to the client’s recovery. Emphasis will be on strengthening students’ communication techniques when working with clients in the mental health and substance use setting.
Course Content

•    Beginning application of MHSU program theoretical concepts:  
    o    PSR approach and Recovery Model of mental health care
    o    Trauma informed practices
    o    Therapeutic relationships
    o    Therapeutic communication skills
    o    Caring client-centered practice
•    Following agency policies and procedures
•    Maintaining client confidentiality
•    Experience with working within the MHSU practice roles and limitations of the MHSU roles and responsibilities
•    Clinical documentation
•    Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team
 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate the beginning application of the MHSU course theory into clinical practice:
    o    PSR approach and Recovery Model of mental health care
    o    Trauma informed practice
    o    Therapeutic relationships
        -    Demonstrate the beginning stages of a therapeutic relationship
        -    Develop caring therapeutic relationship
    o    Therapeutic communication skills
        -    Listening and attending
        -    Nonverbal communication
        -    S.O.L.E.R.
        -    Empathy, warmth, respect, and genuineness
    o    Caring client-centered practice;
2. Demonstrate safety, respect, and accountability in adherence to Douglas College and agency policies and procedures;
3. Promote and support clients' rights and responsibilities while following ethical standards of practice;
4. Demonstrate client confidentiality;
5. Demonstrate self-awareness through use of a clinical practice self-evaluation tool;
6. Understand the multidisciplinary team approach within the clinical setting.

 

Means of Assessment

Assessment will be based on course objectives and will be carried out in accordance with the Douglas College Evaluation Policy. An evaluation schedule is presented at the beginning of the course.

This is a MASTERY course. 

Textbook Materials

Textbooks and materials are to be purchased by students. A list of required textbooks and materials will be provided for students at the beginning of the semester.

Prerequisites

Students in the MHSU program are required to maintain a passing grade of 65% (C+) in all courses to progress in the program.
