Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

1. Apply the MHSU course theory into clinical practice;
2. Implement PSR approach and Recovery Model of mental health care;
3. Recognize trauma informed practices;
4. Demonstrate therapeutic relationships;
5. Apply the stages of a therapeutic relationship;
6. Illustrate caring therapeutic relationship;
7. Implement therapeutic communication skills:
8. Listening and attending;
9. Nonverbal communication;
10. S.O.L.E.R.;
11. Empathy, warmth, respect, and genuineness;
12. Develop beginning skills of confrontation and immediacy;
13. Build caring client-centered practice;
14. Recognize behavioural manifestations, interventions, and treatments for common mental health disorders;
15. Recognize addictions, substance use disorders, and harm reduction theories;
16. Demonstrate safety, respect, and accountability in adherence to Douglas College and agency policies and procedures;
17. Illustrate and support clients' rights and responsibilities while following ethical standards of practice;
18. Demonstrate the importance of client confidentiality;
19. Demonstrate self-awareness through use of a clinical practice self-evaluation tool;
20. Collaborate and practise within the multidisciplinary team.
