Overview

Course description
Students will develop basic competency in computer applications with emphasis on the operating system, word processing, spreadsheet, and email software. Students will apply the knowledge and use of these tools to solve problems encountered in an office environment. Students will integrate their learning and incorporate the use of these tools in the production of professional documents that adhere to workplace standards. This is a hybrid course with full-time or part-time enrolment options.

Learning activities

Learning activities are varied and chosen to align with course outcomes. Learning activities may include, but are not limited to, lecture, independent study, problem-based learning, software applications, hands-on experience, seminar, simulation, and role-playing.

Means of assessment

Assessment will be based on course outcomes and follow the Douglas College Evaluation Policy. An evaluation schedule is presented at the beginning of the course. This is a graded course. To graduate from the MOA program, students must earn a passing grade of 65% (C+) in this course.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, within their scope of practice, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the operating system interface to perform basic software functions and to organize and manage directories and files effectively;
  • Demonstrate the use of email software to manage email communications, handle contacts, and schedule appointments and meetings in a healthcare setting;
  • Demonstrate the use of word processing software to produce a variety of business documents commonly used in a medical office;
  • Demonstrate the use of spreadsheet software as a formatting, organization, and calculation tool;
  • Demonstrate the use of presentation software as a communication tool;
  • Perform business document production through integration of word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and email/calendar software.
