Classroom activities may include:

  3. listening comprehension;
  4. audio-visual activities;
  5. task-based conversation practice;
  6. student presentations;
  7. conversation labs in small groups.
Course description
This course is designed to further aural comprehension, strengthen oral expression and develop reading and writing skills for students who have completed MODL 1172. This course also aims to provide a deeper understanding of Japanese culture. Japanese is used in class almost exclusively.
Course content

Systematic, in-depth study of:

  1. Syntactic structures
  2. Lexicon
  3. Stylistic nuances
  4. Aspects of Japanese culture
Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of spoken discourse at the lower-intermediate level;
  2. Demonstrate understanding of written texts at the lower-intermediate level (hiragana, katakana, and a minimum of 240 kanji);
  3. Conduct communicative tasks and conversations (using formal and informal styles of speech), such as describing abilities, reporting hearsay, asking for favors, and discussing hypothetical situations;
  4. Construct written expressions, such as guided compositions, using hiragana, katakana and kanji;
  5. Articulate understanding of target cultures.
Means of assessment

Assessment will be based on course objectives and will be carried out in accordance with the Douglas College Evaluation Policy. Instructors may use a student's record of attendance and/or level of active participation in a course as a part of the student's graded performance. Where this occurs, expectations and grade calculations regarding class attendance and participation must be clearly defined in the Instructor Course Outline.
