Lectures will include explanation of material by the instructor and practice by the student in the form of exercises.

Course description
The study of the materials of tonal music from rudiments to the basics of harmony. Minimal musical experience and reading ability are required. Open to all students, but priority will be given to full-time Basic Musicianship Program students. Course content includes all the components of the theory assessment for placement into MUSC 1110.
Course content

  1. Melody: characteristics of sound; staff notation and clefs; major, minor, and chromatic scales; simple and compound intervals; simple transposition; terms and signs for dynamics and expression.
  2. Rhythm: rhythmic notation; simple and compound metre; terms for tempo.
  3. Harmony: triad structure; root position and inversions; dominant seventh chords; chord symbols; basic chord progressions; types of cadences; roman numeral analysis; simple figured bass.
  4. Form: introduction to phrase structures and basic forms.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the successful student should be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of musical rudiments, and basic harmony, as well as music writing skills and analytical techniques, as represented in the following tasks:

  1. Answer questions on rudiments in musical notation.
  2. Provide a harmonic analysis of a given passage of music.
  3. Provide written answers (definitions, explanations, descriptions, etc.) about any area of content.
