Presentation of concepts, demonstration of learning strategies and modelling of skills by the instructor, integrated with drills and practice exercises performed by the whole class, small groups and individuals.
Course description
Students will continue to develop aural skills, sight singing skills and rhythmic training.
Course content
- Ear Training
- Identification of melodic and harmonic intervals up to the P8
- Identification of triads in 1st and 2nd inversions
- Identification of chords in four-part style in open spacing
- Rapid identification of notes in major and minor scales
- Identification of seventh chords in root position
- Identification of simple harmonic progressions in major and minor modes
- Rhythmic dictation
- Melodic dictation
- Identification of cadence types, phrase relationships, and basic period structures
- Sight Singing
- Singing of ascending and descending intervals
- Singing of notes of triads in 1st and 2nd inversions
- Singing of tonal melodies including intervals of 6ths and 7ths.
- Rhythmic training
- Continuing work in analysis of rhythms
- Singing and tapping of rhythmic patterns
- Continuing use of conducting patterns
- Musicianship skills
- Increasing fluency with a relative pitch labelling system (e.g., movable-doh solfège or scale degree numbers)
- Increasing fluency with Kodàly hand signs
- Melodic and rhythmic error detection and correction
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the successful student should be able to demonstrate further development in aural and sight singing skills.
