Learning activities

Communications between instructor and students will be conducted online using the course email, bulletin board and chat utilities.  The instructor will guide the students through a series of learning objectives using motivation and online instruction.  The assigned readings, together with the reinforcement exercises, are the principal learning activities.  Additional materials and resources are available online.

Course description
This is a BCCampus on-line provincial course. Medical Billing Procedures II will apply the theory for billing of medical services in introducing the student to automated medical billing software and procedures for the province of British Columbia.
Course content

The following course content will be covered:

  1. Review billing process (manual)
  2. Introduction to billing software
  3. Teleplan
  4. Enter practitioner information
  5. Enter patient information for billing purposes
  6.  Bill MSP for medical services including reciprocal, newborn and referrals
  7. Bill ICBC and WCB and other agencies
  8. Online appointment booking
  9. Other software features
  10. Claims cycle and submission to MSP
  11. Refusals and resubmission of claims
Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have reliably demonstrated  the ability to perform the billing duties of a Medical Office Assistant in a health care setting including:

 

  • Identify the components of the claims cycle for submission to MSP
  • Use a specialized computerized billing program to:
    • Enter practitioner and patient information
    • Bill for services to MSP, ICBC, WCB and other private insurers
    • Produce printed daysheets and verify correct entries
  • Use other features of the software as appropriate
