Overview

Course description
Students will have opportunities to integrate specialized knowledge and skills in caring for persons, families, and groups experiencing episodic and complex ongoing health challenges in medical-surgical and older adult care settings. The professional psychiatric nursing role will continue to be developed and strengthened. Clinical group discussions will assist with the integration of concepts and issues related to the clinical practice setting.

Learning activities

In this course, students engage in a variety of learning activities.  Learning activities occur in psychiatric nursing practice settings, group discussions, and self-study.  Nursing practice experience provides students with opportunities to apply knowledge and use skills related to psychiatric nursing within a holistic context.  Critical reflection through journal writing, practice appraisal and participation in clinical seminars will allow exploration and integration of nursing theory promoting self-directed learning.

Means of assessment

Assessment is consistent with the Douglas College Evaluation Policy.  An evaluation schedule is presented at the beginning of the course.
 
This is a mastery course.

Learning outcomes

Upon the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Apply the Department of Psychiatric Nursing Conceptual Framework including:
    • Curricular Threads (Wellness-Illness Continuum, Professional Values, Professional Caring, and Health Care Delivery System)
    • Concepts (Crisis, Comfort, Hope, Loss, Power, Resiliency, Connectedness
    • Variables (Client System, Psychological Variable, Physiological Variable, Sociocultural Variable, Spiritual Variable, Developmental Variable);
  2. Integrate knowledge, skills and attitudes related to nursing theory and research, therapeutic relationships, clinical practices, and pharmacological interventions when caring for the persons, families, and groups experiencing episodic and ongoing health challenges; 
  3. Demonstrate integration of evidence informed practice based on seven areas of competencies. Students must achieve an expected level of competency based on defined levels of supervision in each semester. Specific competency areas are:
    • Therapeutic Relationships and Therapeutic Use of Self
    • Body of Knowledge and Applications
    • Collaborative Practice
    • Advocacy
    • Quality Care and Client Safety
    • Health Promotion
    • Ethical, Professional and Legal Responsibilities;
  4. Demonstrate culturally safe and anti-racist care as it relates to the diversity of individual lived experiences, and the physical, mental/emotional, spiritual, and cultural client needs;
  5. With assistance, synthesize and apply prior learning, and learning from concurrent semester courses, in psychiatric nursing practice.
