Arts Connections – Skills for Success
Overview
This course will expose students to a number of first semester issues and topics within the context of the thematic approach taken by the Arts Connections program.
Students will receive information and develop competencies in the following areas:
- Introduction to student success and college resources
- Managing time and study schedules
- Note taking from lectures
- Examination preparation and objective style examinations (Matching, True/False, Multiple-Choice)
- Writing subjective style examinations (short-answer and essay format)
- Textbook and journal reading strategies
- Giving oral presentations
- Procrastination and stress
- Memory and visual organizers (mind maps and hierarchies)
- Concentration and motivation
The course is application-oriented and will link the concepts and skills learned to their application in other courses in the Arts Connection program. Students will master course objectives through guided self-discovery, readings, presentations, and discussion.
Students will be graded on a minimum of five different evaluations. No single assignment will be worth more than 30% of the final mark.
As part of the Arts Connections program, this course is intended provide a structured experience for exploring and integrating key strategies for being successful as a student.
By the end of the course the student will be able to:
- Define personal and academic goals for success
- Increase self-confidence and meta-cognition as a learner
- Identify and use the college resources available for providing support to learners
- Design productive ways to manage study time
- Select appropriate methods to enhance information processing in class and from textbooks
- Prepare for and succeed under typical examination conditions
- Understand and overcome factors that impede effective studying
- Employ effective learning processes and participation in other courses in Arts Connections
Students may be required to purchase a textbook and/or course package of materials.
