This course involves three hours of classroom and two hours of laboratory activity per week.
Enrolment is limited to students in the Veterinary Technology Program.

- Terminology and principles of veterinary radiology
- Radiation Safety and Safety Practices
- proper use of radiography equipment and accessories
- proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment - Generation of radiographs for evaluation
- positioning techniques for small animals
- exposure variables and techniques
- radiographic studies of body regions
- specialized techniques for identification of specific conditions - Development, storage and handling of radiographs
- use of specialized screens and grids
- routine identification procedures
- proper storage of unexposed and exposed films
- automatic processing of radiographic films - Types and maintenance of radiographic equipment
- care and maintenance of the x-ray unit
- the processor, screens and personal protective equipment
- proper storage, maintenance and disposal of processing fluids
Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Explain the formation and principles of X-rays.
- Explain the function of an X-ray machine and the principles of radiographic image formation.
- Implement and maintain appropriate radiation safety measures.
- Operate an X-ray machine.
- Position companion animals for routine radiographic evaluations.
- Store, handle, label and process radiographic film.
- Operate and maintain an automatic radiographic film processor.
- Perform regular checks and maintenance on accessory radiographic equipment.
The instructor will present a written course outline with specific evaluation criteria at the beginning of the semester. A final minimum cumulative grade of “C” or 60% is required (in both lecture and lab components) in order to pass this course. Evaluation will be based on quizzes and assignments, practical evaluations including a final practical examination, at least one midterm and a final written examination.
A list of required and optional textbooks and materials is provided for students at the beginning of each semester.
