Douglas College earns national accreditation for one-of-a-kind Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management program

The Canadian College of Health Information Management (CCHIM) has accredited the Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management (BScHIM) at Douglas College, the first degree of its kind in Canada.

Designed to meet evolving health care needs across the country, the program offers students specialized pathways in Information Intelligence, Operational Leadership and Management, allowing them to tailor their education to current and emerging demands in health care data management and health information privacy.

“We are delighted to receive accreditation from CCHIM as our program evolves to meet the demands of a growing health information management profession,” said Dr. Patricia Visosky, BScHIM program coordinator and Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) Board member. “Our curriculum is responsive to student goals as well as the needs of our industry partners.”

Graduates of the BScHIM program will now be eligible to write the CCHIM National Certification Exam, providing them with the opportunity to attain the Certified Health Information Management (CHIM) professional designation.

“Douglas College has set a benchmark for excellence in health information education. This accreditation reflects the College’s dedication to equipping its students with the knowledge and skills required to thrive in today’s dynamic health information landscape,” said Jeff Nesbitt, CEO and Registrar of CHIMA.

“This milestone underscores Douglas College’s leadership in fostering talent that will shape the future of health information in Canada. Their commitment to education and innovation is a critical asset to the profession.”

Students graduate from the BScHIM program job-ready and equipped with real-world experience through two internships and a 180-hour practicum built into the program, which gives them practical knowledge in health information science, project management, information technology and more. Graduates can consider a breadth of job options, from database analysts and data administrators to health policy researchers, consultants and program officers.

Applications for the Fall 2025 semester are now open.
