Overview

The Legal Office Skills Online Certificate Program provides people currently working in an office environment with the skills needed to work in legal firms or in the legal departments of financial, real estate or other firms. Courses cover legal office procedures, family litigation, wills and estates, and conveyancing procedures. The program is offered over the Internet, allowing students to complete coursework on their own time. Exams are written at the College campus.

NOTE: International students are not currently eligible for this program. For more information, contact Douglas College International.

Admissions Requirements

  1. General College Admission Requirements (excluding Language Proficiency Requirement)
  2. An attestation form, certifying that you can satisfy the following requirements:
    • at least one year of recent office experience
    • good working knowledge of an up-to-date word processing program such as WordPerfect or MS Word
    • good working knowledge of an up-to-date web browser such as MS Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox
    • keyboarding speed of 50 net words per minute on a five-minute timing
  3. English 11 with a grade of "C" or better or one of the following equivalents:
    • EN 12 "P"
    • EN LIT 12 "P"
    • TPC 12 "P"
    • COMM 12 "C+"

A minimum of 50% of the required program courses must be taken at Douglas College (effective for Summer 2017 graduation).

All courses must be completed with a grade of "C-" or higher.

Career Pathways

Graduates of the Legal Office Skills Online Certificate Program have the training necessary to work in legal firms or the legal departments of finance, real estate, or other firms. Between 80 and 90 percent of our graduates are working within one month of graduation. Currently, over 90 percent of our graduates are using their acquired skills on the job. Many gain employment through their practicum placements.
