Overview
Develop in-depth knowledge of legal office procedures, legal terminology, court systems, legal record-keeping and the process of billing clients with the Certificate in Legal Office Administration. You'll also learn about the preparation, filing and service of legal documents in the areas of wills and estates, family law, litigation, corporate law, conveyancing and develop your skills with a three-week practicum.
You’ll gain skills in keyboarding, machine transcription (dicta typing), legal administrative procedures and business communications, preparing you for a career in law firms, notary offices and legal departments for companies, government agencies or ministries.
Further education
Graduates can choose to complete another year of studies at Douglas College to earn an Office Administration Diploma. Many graduates also go on to become legal assistants after taking additional training through other institutions.
Admissions Requirements
Applicants must meet the admission requirements listed below:
- General College Admission Requirements (excluding Language Proficiency Requirement)
- English 11 with a grade of "C" or better or the following exemptions:
- EN 12 "P"
- EN LIT 12 "P"
- TPC 12 "P"
- COMM 12 "C+"
Notes:
- Strong English skills are required. Students who are weak in English skills should consider upgrading through either ENGU or ELLA courses.

Graduation Requirements:
- Successful completion of 30 credits
- 50% of all coursework (15 credits) must be completed at Douglas College
- All courses must be completed with a minimum grade of “C” or higher except Mastery graded course(s).
- Time Limit for Completion: 4 years from acceptance into the program.
