In this course, students will learn clinical procedure skills through a variety of means including lecture, observation, audio-visual aids, demonstration, simulations, and case studies.

Course Description
This course builds on MHPS 1150: Personal Care and Assistance I. This practical course offers students the opportunity to acquire personal care and assistance skills within the parameters of the HCA role. The course comprises class and supervised laboratory experiences. The student will integrate prior theory to develop caregiver skills that maintain and promote the comfort, safety, and independence of clients in community and facility contexts.

  1. Problem-solving when carrying out caregiving procedures
  2. Hand and foot care
  3. Compression stockings
  4. Measuring vital signs
  5. Heat and cold applications
  6. Medications
  7. Assisting with oxygen needs
  8. Home management
Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Perform personal care skills in an organized manner ensuring the comfort and appropriate independence of the client;
  2. Apply an informed problem-solving process to the provision of care and assistance;
  3. Provide personal care and assistance within the parameters of the HCA role;
  4. Provide care and assistance in ways that maintain safety for self and others in a variety of contexts.
Means of Assessment

Assessment will be based on course objectives and will be carried out in accordance with the Douglas College Evaluation Policy. An evaluation schedule is presented at the beginning of the course.

This is a mastery course.

Prerequisites

Students in the HCA program are required to maintain a passing grade of 65% (C+) in all courses in order to progress in the program.
