Overview

Course description
This practicum course is completed after successful completion of all other program coursework. During a three-week practicum, students will apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they learned in theory class to develop professional competency in hospitals or medical offices.

Learning activities

Learning activities are varied and chosen to align with course outcomes. Learning activities may include, but are not limited to, onsite training, hands-on experience, reflective activities, report production, group discussion, seminar, and presentation.

Means of assessment

Assessment will be based on course outcomes and follow the Douglas College Evaluation Policy. An evaluation schedule is presented at the beginning of the course. This is a mastery course. To graduate from the MOA program, students must earn a mastery grade (MAS) in this course.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, within their scope of practice, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate responsibility and professionalism in all aspects of the practicum placement per documented Practicum Guidelines;
  • Apply professionalism and empathy in all forms of communication;
  • Demonstrate competency in the performance of the duties of a Medical Office Assistant (MOA);
  • Demonstrate the use of evidence-based practice to confirm information as needed;
  • Analyze practice as an MOA through reflective assignments provided by the instructor.
