Sport Science (Diploma)
Curriculum Guideline
The Sport Science department uses a preferential admission procedure. Admission to the Sport Science Diploma program is contingent upon:
- Availability of seats; and
- All of the admission requirements in either section A or B; and
- All of the admission requirements of section C below; and
- Applicant ranking as determined by a process of preferential admission evaluation. The preferential admission process will assign scores to:
- Two professional references (notes 1,2 below)
- GPA
Following this review applicants are ranked according to their total score. Applicants with the same total score will be offered seats based on their date of application.
A) Minimum Academic Admission Requirements: Secondary Applicants
- General College Admission Requirements; and
- English 12 with a minimum grade of "C", or approved substitution; and
- Math 11 with a minimum grade of "C", or equivalent (note 3); and
- Three grade 11 or 12 courses with a minimum grade of "C".
B) Minimum Academic Admission Requirements: Post-secondary Applicants (Note: Students who have completed 12 or more university transferable credits will be considered as post-secondary applicants.)
- General College Admission Requirements and
- English 12 with a minimum grade of "C", or approved substitution; and
- Math 11 with a minimum grade of "C", or equivalent (note 3); and
- Minimum post-secondary GPA of 2.33 (minimum 12 credits).
C) All Applicants
- Two reference forms from coaches, PE teachers or community leaders verifying one season of sport experience and character reference note 1
Notes:
- A professional referee may include but is not limited to: a teacher, coach, employer, etc. Family members are not able to act as referees. Each referee's full name, contact information, and nature of relationship to applicant must be provided.
- Based on reference responses, the Sport Science Department may conduct interviews with all or chosen applicants.
- To fulfill the Math 11 admission requirement, Foundations of Math 11, Principles of Math 11 or higher are recommended. Students considering SPSC Diploma Kinesiology Specialization or the Bachelor of Physical Education and Coaching will require Foundations of Math 11, Principles of Math 11 or higher to satisfy the prerequisite for SPSC 1151.
- PE 11 or 12 or equivalent is an additional recommended course.
Graduation Requirements:
- Successful completion of a minimum of 60 credits (20 courses)
- 25% (15 credits) must be completed at Douglas College
- All courses must be university transfer and must be selected from a minimum of four subject areas. A university transfer course is defined as a course that transfer to one of the five Research Universities - SFU, UBC, UBCO, UNBC or UVIC - according to the BC Transfer Guide.
Sport Science Diploma - Kinesiology Specialization:
60 credits (20 courses) meeting all of the following criteria:
- 30 Sport Science credits (10 courses) which must include:
- SPSC 1103; SPSC 1105; SPSC 1151; SPSC 1164; SPSC 1195; SPSC 2205; SPSC 2231; SPSC 2275
- Plus 2 SPSC electives
- 12 non-Sport Science elective credits (4 courses)
- 6 Anatomy and physiology credits (2 courses):
- 3 Math credits (1 course)
- 3 English credits (1 course with English 1130 recommended)
- Any remaining credits are to be selected depending on student’s transfer destination
Sport Science Diploma - Health and Recreation Specialization:
60 credits (20 courses) meeting all of the following criteria:
- 36 Sport Science credits (12 courses) which must include:
- SPSC 1103; SPSC 1105; SPSC 1192; SPSC 1195; SPSC 1318 or SPSC 1319; SPSC 2231; SPSC 2205; SPSC 2252; SPSC 2292; SPSC 2210
- Plus 2 SPSC electives
- 6 non-Sport Science elective credits (2 courses)
- 6 credits of Commerce & Business Administration courses (2 courses) from the following:
- 3 Social Science credits (1 course): SOSC 2140
- 9 foundation credits (3 courses) including:
- PSYC (3); ENGL (3) (ENGL 1130 recommended); MATH (3)
Sport Science Diploma - Interdisciplinary
60 credits (20 courses) meeting all of the following criteria:
- 18-30 credits of university transfer Sport Science courses
- 24-36 credits of university transfer non-Sport Science elective courses
- 6 English credits (2 courses with ENGL 1130 recommended as one of these)
Notes:
- Students are advised to align their non-SPSC elective courses with the post-secondary institution to which they plan to transfer (e.g., UBC Kinesiology requires 4 science elective courses from Biology, Chemistry, Math, or Physics).
- Students need not be registered in the Sport Science program to qualify for the Diploma in Sport Science.
