Learning activities

Learning activities are varied and chosen to align with course outcomes. Learning activities may include, but are not limited to, lecture, independent study, problem-based learning, software applications, keyboarding technique drills and assessments, transcription, hands-on experience, seminar, simulation, and role-playing.

Course description
Students will integrate previous theory and skill to demonstrate effective meeting administration. Students will identify and relay community liaison opportunities for patients. Students will efficiently manage data with applicable therapeutic communication, accuracy, and privacy considerations. This is a hybrid course with full-time or part-time enrolment options.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, within their scope of practice, students will be able to:

  • Transcribe medical letters and reports with attention to accuracy and proofreading;
  • Demonstrate effective office management skills, including planning and conducting effective business meetings;
  • Demonstrate appropriate therapeutic and trauma-informed communication techniques specific to a medical environment;
  • Increase keyboarding speed to 55 net words per minute with 98% accuracy;
  • Identify appropriate community resources and access to processes;
  • Demonstrate ability to set up and maintain medical records filing systems and apply FOIPPA requirements when releasing information. 
Means of assessment

Assessment will be based on course outcomes and follow the Douglas College Evaluation Policy. An evaluation schedule is presented at the beginning of the course. This is a graded course. To graduate from the MOA program, students must earn a passing grade of 65% (C+) in this course.

Textbooks and materials are to be purchased by students. A list of required textbooks and materials is provided to students at the beginning of the semester.

MOAD 1100

MOAD 1200 (or minimum grade of 60% or C in OADM 1151; or minimum grade of MAS in OADM 1206 and 60% or C in OADM 1244)

MOAD 1300 (or minimum grade of 60% or C in OADM 1246)
And
MOAD 1400 (or minimum grade of 60% or C in OADM 1114)
And
